Human Resources? No, Human Remains!

According to an article published by Best Jobs blog today, Romanian employees would risk their health and that of others, rather than call in sick. What is more surprising is that the respondents are young people, in the age bracket of 25 to 35, male, and holders of post-grad degrees.

This set me thinking: is it because men are more likely to put a cold behind them and pretend it doesn't exist? Is it about pride, or it is about fear?  It could well be the latter. In the survey, 34.13% of respondents claimed that they fear losing their job, while 37.54% replied that they have too much work to do, to call in sick.

1. Da, am prea mult de munca sa lipsesc – 37.54%
2. Da, in perioada aceasta mi-e frica sa nu imi pierd jobul – 34.13%
3. Nu, ma odihnesc pana ma insanatosesc – 20%
4. Nu, insa muncesc de acasa in schimb – 8.33%

Others brace up and admit they take time off, either to rest (20%), or to work from home (8%).  This is the safest thing to do under the circumstances, both for the sick and for their workmates.

Attempting to suggest what one should do is not my calling, as we are all the artisans of our destiny (which is called life); however, the results of the survey reminded me of the old communist mentality that one had to sign in, no matter what, and in the process ignoring concepts such as productivity, competence, or performance

Such a servile attitude towards work explains, paradoxically, the lack of motivation and loyalty for the employer Romanian workers grudgingly admit.

Romanian employers must shoulder their fair share of blame as well. Motivation comes from within the organization and in recent times, the economic crisis has provided a good excuse for chopping training budgets and other financial incentives. What motivates people today is an unhealthy negative motivation, hence the results of the survey are quite gloomy and don't bode well for the future of productivity.
